10 Tips for Public Speaking – How to find your confidence

null

Feeling some nervousness before giving a speech is natural and even beneficial, but too much nervousness can be detrimental. Here are some proven tips on how to control your butterflies and give better presentations:

  1. Know your material. Pick a topic you are interested in. Know more about it than you include in your speech. Use humor, personal stories and conversational language – that way you won’t easily forget what to say.
  2. Practice. Practice. Practice! Rehearse out loud with all equipment you plan on using. Revise as necessary. Work to control filler words; Practice, pause and breathe. Practice with a timer and allow time for the unexpected.
  3. Know the audience. Greet some of the audience members as they arrive. It’s easier to speak to a group of friends than to strangers.
  4. Know the room. Arrive early, walk around the speaking area and practice using the microphone and any visual aids.
  5. Relax. Begin by addressing the audience. It buys you time and calms your nerves. Pause, smile and count to three before saying anything. (“One one-thousand, two one-thousand, three one-thousand. Pause. Begin.) Transform nervous energy into enthusiasm.
  6. Visualize yourself giving your speech. Imagine yourself speaking, your voice loud, clear and confident. Visualize the audience clapping – it will boost your confidence.
  7. Realize that people want you to succeed. Audiences want you to be interesting, stimulating, informative and entertaining. They’re rooting for you.
  8. Don’t apologize for any nervousness or problem – the audience probably never noticed it.
  9. Concentrate on the message – not the medium. Focus your attention away from your own anxieties and concentrate on your message and your audience.
  10. Gain experience. Mainly, your speech should represent you — as an authority and as a person. Experience builds confidence, which is the key to effective speaking. A Toastmasters club can provide the experience you need in a safe and friendly environment.

Dear all friends.. how are you?

Dear all friends.. how are you?

Hope everything runs well for you there.. you may feel a little bit shocked when receiving this, as it has been a couple months ago since the last time i weekly sent you an email, right?  well.. i am here sending this email just want you to know how Toastmaster has been helping me so far during my study time at STAN and about a new thing from Catalyst. In Toastmasters i learn how to be confident in conveying ideas and arguments while not leaving the politeness behind, i apply both of them in an hand-in-hand way. Once i came up to the front of the class to deliver 2-3-minute speech, and i found myself comfortably pouring my minds into words with a minimum nervousness..

Then you see.. the fact is that a nervousness is a natural condition for everyone, none in the world doesn’t feel nervous when their turn to speak up comes. And it is not a reality that we have to be afraid of!!! because the opportunity to learn is everywhere, The Catalyst Toastmasters Club is one of them!!! the nearest one from our office!! and once you join, there will be no condition restricted by a formal scehduled, you can come to any club throughout the world ..

What is it new from The Catalyst TMC????That is the point i want to outline.. Started from next month, July 2010, is a new term for The Catalyst TMC. That will be a new period with new executive committees.. but that is not too important to announce without knowing who they are. Because it is they who bring the spirit and continue creating better learning environtment for all The Catalyst’s members and for those who want to join too..

The President  : Novrizal, CC, CL.

Vice President Education: Niken Evi Suryani, CC.

Vice President Membership: TM Siska Premida Wardani

Vice President Public Relation: TM Steviana Pasca Sarjana

Secretary: TM Dwi Wulandari Astuti

SAA: TM Martumpal Jonathan

For those mentioned above, i just want to say:’Congratulation, and we all owe you more than thanks for your willingness to take that lofty duty’. It has been for several times i have a monologue of silence within my self while saying this :’Alhamdulillah, thank you Toastmaster, thank you Catalyst Friends’ and frankly speaking, for those receiving this email, i just want you all to feel the same. Because wherever we live, and whomever we live or work with, Communication is not an option , and believe me.. you will be warmly welcomed when coming to the meeting.. and you will have a moment to learn from other members while speaking, listening and in a fun way for sure.. there is no need to be shame, since every ashamedness is just like a fake imagination blockading our bravery to learn.

Warmly Regards,
Erikson

The Secret of Your Success

When my employer and mentor, United States Senator Mark Hatfield, retired after 45 years in public service, he was asked by many people what his secret was to longevity and successin politics. His reply: Building personal relationships. Not education, or intelligence, or financial resources. The secret was people.

Of the many benefits we receive in Toastmasters, one of the greatest is the people we meet and the friendship we form. Our network of Toastmasters friends can help us in all aspects of life.

This is certainly true for me. Earlier this year I was between careers. When I attended the Toastmasters Board Meeting this past February, in California, Past District 5 Governor Sheryl Roush took my photo and posted it on Facebook, a Web-based social networking site. Lynn Peterson, a commissioner for Clackamas County in Oregon, is a Facebook friend of mine who saw my Toastmasters photo and sent me a message asking if I had applied for the job of Clackamas County public affairs manager. I was not aware the job existed. Because of Toastmasters – where I met Sheryl – and because of Facebook – where I was connected to Lynn – I found my current career. Thank you, Sheryl and Lynn!

Our Toastmasters friendships can also lead to love. My friend Naomi invited me to my first Toastmasters meeting. I joined Toastmasters because of her encouragement. Many years later, I introduced Naomi to my Toastmasters friend Doug, who later married her. You never know where your Toastmasters associations will take you!

These are just a few examples of how Toastmasters, and our connections to others, change our lives, and lives, and in so many different ways!

At your next club meeting, look around at your fellow members. Are your best friends there? Does the meeting include mentors who guide you, speakers you emulate or leaders you learn from? Our involvement in Toastmasters is much more than improving our personal communication and leadership skills. Toastmasters offers us the opportunity to build our network of friends, learn from our peers and discover the rewards of helping others.

Perhaps the club members sitting next to you will help you find your next job, introduce you to your future spouse or support you when you need it most. That is the power of relationships. That is the potensial of Toastmasters. Your journey of building relationships starts now!

International President
